Vinny Sifts Through Shameless South High Propaganda

B. S. PATROL -- In a recent message to parents, South High Principal Linda Nelson gave the public several reasons why she feels that public education, and her school in particular, is "successful." She claims that the new small learning communities are "making significant progress toward providing a more personalized and rigorous education for South High students." Of course, she fails to mention the fact that several students and parents still think this program is a stupid idea, or that there is not yet any evidence of their success or failure, because the first group of students who started high school after the program was in place haven't graduated yet (or had the opportunity to graduate but didn't, which is more common in Minneapolis anyway).
Of course, Principal Nelson was not done dispensing propaganda. She then told people that the free theater tickets (and boring, propaganda-filled classroom sessions) given to students through Project Success enrich the educational program, while failing to mention that not only does the program replace at least nine hours a year of normal English instruction, but the entire concept is an advertising program to try and make high school kids lifelong supporters of the Guthrie Theater and their numerous requests for state help in building new theater facilities.
But I thought that the most amusing part of Nelson's missive was when she mentioned that South High has been named the Second Most Philosophical School in America. I can't argue with that. It does sometimes seem like Nelson & Co. are in a trance...of course, I'd prefer to lose the philosophy "honor" in favor of increased graduation rates, but that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.--Dr. Vinny, South High Sucks.com Founder & Publisher
