South High's Project "Success"

What is the deal with this "Project Success" crap anyway? So we have this annoying lady
named Maren waste a day in our English classes every month to hawk free
theater tickets? I mean, I'm all for allowing students to attend and perform in
plays on their own time, but this does not mean that everyone wants to or even should
attend the theater on a regular basis. After all, theater is a business, and they are getting a pretty
cozy promotion gig with this program. But the thing that's most offensive is that this
theater advertising/customer recruiting agency purports to be offering students a chance to
achieve their dreams--and it just so happens that the recommended method of doing this is to become a lifelong
customer of the sponsoring theaters. Give me a break.
OK, OK, the truth is that they do talk about things other than theater in Project "Success".
But you can only be asked "what college are you going to?", or "what are you going to be when you
grow up?" so many times before you want to throw something at the inquisitor.
I realize and agree that students should be thinking about their futures, but isn't there a
better way to encourage them to do this? Sure there is. And this whole article
is not intended to say that this program should be banned; just that it should be
voluntary, and that the operators of the program should be intellectually honest and
rename their organization the Theater Promotion Society.--Dr. Vinny, South High Sucks.com Founder & Publisher
