Other Sucks Sites
Comment on this in our Message Board!
Shortly after we started SouthHighSucks.com in March 2002, we at Vinny's Education Coalition began to scour the web for sites similar to our own. We came up with a depressingly low number--2.
Since then, both of those sites have been taken down. In April 2005, we heard about a new site, and it's the only one we currently know about. If you know about other sucks sites, please send us the URL through the comment form in the right margin of this page, or click here to add it to the SouthHighSucks.com LinkShare.
This new site ended up being the subject of an ACLU complaint in spring 2005, after the sites' owner was suspended for posting pictures he'd taken of his principal illegally smoking on school property. The school ultimately was forced to allow the site's owner back in school, and since then, the site has featured additional stories and commentaries revealing troubling problems at his school. According to the site, the same principal he caught smoking at the school also used to make announcements on the P. A. saying that students aren't allowed to go to the bathroom during class unless they are "bleeding or not breathing." Also, the school apparently has tried to improve appallingly bad attendance statistics by offering students a check for $100 at the end of the year if they have perfect attendance all year--and then, according to the site, when a kid looks like they might actually have perfect attendance, they falsely mark them as tardy or absent. Clearly, this school is insane, and The Central Scoop appears to offer a much-needed dose of common sense in their logic-impaired realm.
Editor's Note: Here's a blurb on our favorite departed sucks site:
The Street Light was an independent, student-owned and operated website covering Cranford High School in Cranford, NJ (which is in the greater New York City area). The Street Light began operation before we did, in the fall of 2001. Later, management of the site was transferred from the original operator, who graduated from the school in June 2002. Over that summer, the site had server difficulties and to reduce expenses, the new operator began to cut the amount of articles on their server. While they used to have a full archive of the impressively large number of articles they wrote in their first nine months, they no longer made those available to visitors--only the most recent stories were posted. Then, the new operator of the site did a complete redesign of The Street Light, and began to generate new articles and a more lively debate in their message board. We heartily recommended this site to our visitors, and applauded their excellence in independent student journalism, but ultimately, it was not enough. In 2003, the site was taken down after failing to pay the domain fee.
