Some Gullible Residents Think Hiking Taxes Will Solve Problem

Yet Another example of MPLS District Waste:

www.mpsfns.org

Wasteful Spending PatrolThe brain trust at the Minneapolis School District is paying out money for a special Food Services Department website, which features self-promotional propaganda and little useful information. The site even has a MPLS Board of Education members list on the front page that hasn't been accurate since December 2001.

In a February 6, 2003 meeting to get public comments on the 2003-04 Minneapolis school budget cuts, several citizens told the school board that they'd be more than willing to accept tax hikes to prevent class size hikes. Some people were angry that the district hadn't put an excess-levy referendum on the ballot in November like many other Minnesota districts did, especially since district officials say that it's too late to have a referendum to fix the current budget problems. Not too many people realized the truth: that the school board got us in this mess, and they are going to have to dig themselves out of it. And they have no good reason to hike class sizes, either. In fact, it is the position of Vinny's Education Coalition that if they did hike class sizes, they would be breaching their contract with voters. It's as simple as that.--Mr. T Bagger, Editor at Large

Off-Site Article of the Month: Anti-Profile Column

The Pioneer Press has a "community columnist" program, in which they pick eight people every year to write six or seven columns over the course of that year on issues that effect our community. This year, one of those people was a pretty bright White Bear Lake high school student whose debut column, Take it from a student: Profile must be replaced, does a good job of identifying the primary problems that this state has been experiencing thanks to the Profile of Learning. This 16-year-old, Brinton Ahlin, seems pretty smart to us, and we look forward to seeing more of his work in the paper.--Dr. Vinny, South High Sucks.com Founder & Publisher

South High Sucks.com Gets a Makeover

For almost a year, South High Sucks.com has operated without a uniform site design. In fact, we had never put together a design at all; we just sort of started putting things on the website and adding and modifying pages on-the-fly. It didn't take long for this to cause problems, both for us and our visitors. Finally, about a month ago, I decided I couldn't take it anymore, and along with the other South High Sucks.com staffers, began to put together a totally new look for this site. Now, after many hours of sitting in front of the computer, we're finally done. (Now we can go back to sitting in front of the television:)

Seriously, though, we put a lot of work into this design, and encorporated several visitor suggestions in this final product. For example, several people suggested we have summaries of each article, which we now have--on the article, editorial and features pages. Other people complained about the old top-of-the-screen menu, so we got rid of it. And many people griped about how hard it was for them to contact us. We solved that problem, too: in the right margin of every page, we have an "instant-feedback" comment form. Finally, we changed the color scheme, which we never got much positive feedback on. Anyway, I sincerely hope you like the new design, but even more than that, I hope you will let me know what you think of it, good or bad. Send me a note through the comment form in the right margin of this page with your thoughts on our new look. And thanks for visiting South High Sucks.com.--Mr. T Bagger, South High Sucks.com Chief Designer
