Carol Johnson Leaving MPLS Schools
Vinny's Education Coalition can't wait to see her Walking in Memphis!

SIGNS OF HOPE PATROL -- Bob Hope, may he rest in peace, is dead, but we may still have some hope here in the river city now that Minneapolis Public Schools Superintendent Carol Johnson is moving back to her home state of Tennessee. Evidently, Johnson, who can waste money with the best of them, is one of the most sought-after superintendents in the country--at least according to the Star Tribune--and districts coast to coast have wet dreams about getting her as their superintendent. But now, the other districts will have to go home crying, because Johnson has accepted a job as Superintendent of Memphis Public Schools. You see, Memphis officials have completely lost their minds and are prepared to pay Johnson a $200,000-a-year salary (maybe even more!) to head up their soon-to-be-losing team.
Johnson beat out several other candidates for the position, and the job offer was approved by a 6-2 vote by the Memphis Board of Education, who notified Johnson of their decision shortly before 9pm on Wednesday, July 30, 2003. There was some doubt about whether Johnson would accept the job, mostly because she rejected another high-profile offer from Nashville, Tennessee, just two years ago. But this time, Johnson quickly accepted the offer, and publicly anounced her decision at a news conference shortly after 11:30am on Thursday, July 31, 2003.
David Jennings: Interim--and Possibly Permanent--Superintendent
Just moments after Johnson tendered her resignation (which takes effect September 30, 2003), School Board Chair Sharon Henry-Blythe announced that David Jennings, who orchestrated phony solutions to the 2003 Big Budget Deficit, will be acting Superintendent until they find a permanent replacement for Johnson. Presumably, Jennings will continue as COO, and may well recieve a substantial raise, at least temporarily. However, some district insiders have told the media that Jennings may well become the permanent Superintendent, because, among other things, his days as a Republican in the MN State House mean he could serve as a liaison between the greedy district and anti-spending conservative Republicans.
Other than appointing Jennings, MPLS School Board members are not commenting on the situation except to praise Johnson and groan about the loss of their partner in crime. Johnson herself says that the district's Big Budget Deficit and it's aftermath had no bearing on her decision to accept this position. And to be fair, the Memphis schools are looking at their own $30,000,000+ budget deficit right now, so the money woes won't go away for poor Carol Johnson...but those of you in Memphis may have family budget problems when Johnson tries to raise your taxes to sustain government bloat. Good luck, Memphis taxpayers. You'll need it.--Mr. T Bagger, Editor-at-Large
