Pawlenty Wants Special Session to Ban Gay Marriage
Boy, what a great leader we have here in Minnesota. Gov. Tim Pawlenty has decided that the important factor in his decision as to whether to bring back ornery lawmakers for a special session is gay marriage. He apparently listened to the rantings of the misguided religious zealots who say that gay marriage must be banned at all costs--of course, it's already banned, but now they want it banned in the Minnesota Constitution. What a con! Look, the problem in America is fornication--sex before marriage. That's what's tearing up America. We need to allow gays to marry and then start creating taboos against fornication. That's my opinion.
Bringing Home The Pork & Emptying Your WalletAs for the special session, I hope the legislators stay home. We dodged a bullet there with that bonding bill. Both parties wanted to use the bill to fund wasteful pet projects--the only reason the bill was ultimately derailed was that the Democrats got greedy. They failed to negotiate with the Republicans and so now there are no new pet projects. Of course, that makes the Democrats mad, but it also makes some Republicans mad--after all, they failed to bring home the pork. In fact, I think it is a distinct possibility that the Governor is using the gay marriage issue as a foil to appease his conservative supporters but also to allow the legislature to reconvene and approve unnecessary government borrowing for wasteful pet projects. In that scenario, civil rights, common sense, and taxpayers will get screwed.
A Wasteful Pet Project: The Hiawatha LRT LineBut perhaps you think pet projects are a good thing. Allow me to give you an example of a wasteful pet project: the Hiawatha Light Rail Line, or as I call it, "the Boondoggle." It will finally carry passengers on June 26, 2004 at 11am, when the politicos, including people like R. T. "I'll show Charles Barkley some fun" Rybak, and other empty suits participate in the obligatory ridiculous ribbon cutting ceremony in Downtown Minneapolis. And after the first few days, no one will ride it. They even have a scam for that--there will be no obvious fare collection point (which allows people not to pay) but also that allows them not to make statistics available--so no one gets proof that no one rides the light rail. Heh, heh. What a scam. Go to our message boards and tell me what you think.--Dr. Vinny, Founder & Publisher
MN Education Commissioner Yecke Gets the Boot
Cheri Yecke has been ousted as MN State Education Commissioner on a party line vote on Sunday May 16, 2004. At SouthHighSucks.com, we're somewhat glad that she is gone--we feel she was kind of nutty. But we have to concede that the DFL hasn't changed the overall political situation much. Do you think that Gov. Tim Pawlenty is going to appoint someone with views substantially different from Yecke's? I don't. I think that he may even appoint someone that pisses off the DFL even more. And while we don't agree with Pawlenty (or his unnamed future appointee) we don't see anything wrong with pissing off the DFL.
DFL Endorses Outsiders, But No Incumbents in MPLS School Board Race
Maybe the DFL finally gets it. Or maybe not. Either way, they have made a statement. On Saturday, May 15, 2004, the city DFL endorsed Peggy Flanagan and Lydia Lee, but not incumbents Sharon Henry-Blythe or Dennis Schapiro. This signals that they, too may want change on the school board--or it could be window-dressing. We'll find out soon enough. If the teacher's union goes all-out in support of these ladies, then they're probably not the best choices. If not, they're better than Al-Qaida. Of course, that's not saying much. What do you think?
